Remix Videos
As producers of remix videos, English learners are able to review resources such as music, other videos, and written sources to compile information on their topic. They need to selective in what they include and choose how to present their topic to others in a succinct and meaningful way. English learners are able to analyze the language of others as well as their own to find what is most effective in getting their point across. If students work in groups, they can discuss why a phrase or sentence should be included as well as practice their own English with each other. As consumers of remix videos, students are presented a topic in a way that is concise and easy to understand. They can discuss what was used in the video and why it may have been used. The teacher can give the students a lens, prompt, or series of questions with which to view and respond to the video. Discussion or response can be directed towards grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary. There are opportunities for students to respond verbally or in written form to the content of the video. If students are presenting their videos, the class can discuss questions they have for the authors or give them feedback.
As a teaching tool, making a remix video is a great way to introduce or review key concepts in the classroom using text, music, and multimedia resources. For example, below I created a remix video for my students to introduce Martin Luther King Jr. and encourage discussion on his impact in the United States. I played the video to my students the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day so they could understand why we honor it. By enhancing their prior knowledge, students made more connections when we read the reading comprehension passages about him.
